Colin's Amazing Leaps of Logic

One afternoon as Colin and I (DH) were driving alone in the car, Colin asks, "Dad...did God make Satan evil?" I answered, "No, He created Satan as Lucifer, the most beautiful and magnificent of all of the angels." Colin continued, " But then why did Satan become bad?"
I explained about Satan's attempt to usurp God's throne (not possible - like me playing professional basketball with Michael Jordan!) and his removal from Heaven to the earthly realms.
Not deterred, Colin continued, "Dad, if God knows everything, why did He create Satan when he KNEW that he would become bad?" Whew! Taken to theological task by my six year old makes for a fun, enlightenting, but very challenging morning :)
We ended the conversation with the importance of choice - God created Satan and us with the knowedge that some of us would choose evil over good. Why did He do this? Call it a calculated risk - He know that we could not honestly love him unless were were given the freedome to do so. Lucifer and a third of the angels chose wrong - but it was their choice.
